Ardennes Offensive - Peiper's route

Just before dawn on December 16 1944 the German army opened their offensive Wacht am Rhein with a terrific artillery barrage. Shortly after that German divisions poured into the thinly held American lines in the Ardennes. The goal was to capture Antwerp and effectively cutting the Allies armies in half, thus hoping to turn the tide in the west and force a surrender of cease fire of the western allies.
The main German thrust was to be carried out by 1st SS Panzer Division Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler. The spearhead of this division was to be led by Kampfgruppe Peiper, named after its commander Standartenführer Joachim Peiper. Confined to narrow, slippery and ill maintained roads and confronted by numerous blown bridges Peiper's column inched forward until finally checked just west of La Gleize. Here the Kampgruppe was to make its final stand until it was forced to escape by night and by foot.
This tour follows in the trail of Kampfgruppe Peiper and takes us to the places where they were effectively countered time and again by sometimes makeshift American units.
