Market Garden -  XXX breakout and 101st Airborne area

Introduction

At 14:00u on September 17th 1944 the guns of XXX Corps open up on the German positions south of Valkenswaard. Half an hour later 20.000 vehicles are set in motion to advance on Arnhem on a single road! Shortly before the American 101st Airborne Division landed near Son and Veghel in order to capture the bridges in that area vital to the advance of XXX Corps. In an operational area stretching almost 60 kilometers both British and Americans forces found themselves fighting to keep open what is now called "Hell's highway".

This tour takes you by car of van from the Neerpelt bridgehead up to Eindhoven and beyond to Son and Veghel. Basically we will follow the route of XXX Corps advancing to link up with the airborne troops. This route, also known als Central Line or Club Route, or even better known as Hell's Highway, was continuously cut by German forces making both advance and lines of communication difficult and perilous. Both British and American forces fought fiercely to keep the route open and trying get to Arnhem.
